WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: Sing

"But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord's praise, for he has been good to me."
 —Psalm 13:5-6, NIV

The gray days of winter can dampen our spirits, especially when we fail to maintain a healthy focus.

Our North Carolina winters are mild. There are seldom days when people are housebound due to inclement weather. Personally, I’m a homebody and can stay secluded in my home for a week and never develop cabin fever. Thankfully for me staying in is still a choice. I might respond differently if circumstances such as illness, tragedy, or personal loss dictated my actions.

People who suffer from depression in the winter months, a condition known as SAD (seasonal affective disorder), can experience anxiety, fatigue, and weight gain. Though the causes, symptoms, and severity of SAD may vary, researchers agree that those who suffer have one thing in common—an acute sensitivity to the lack of light.

Although there are other ways to lessen the effects of SAD, I’ve listed a few below to aid in your return to happiness.

o   Go outside as much as possible. Sunlight generates the production of Vitamin D, the body’s natural antidepressant. If physical circumstances limit your ability to go outdoors, sit by a window as much as possible or invest in a sun lamp equipped with special fluorescent tubes that mimic the sun’s beneficial rays.

o   Exercise. Yes, it's that dreaded eight letter word, but regular exercise is a natural and healthy way to counter feelings of depression. Vigorous exercise releases a hormone called endorphins which elevate your mood and make you feel happy.

o   Avoid coffee. Caffeine can cause you to feel stressed and anxious. Green tea, a natural antidepressant, is a healthy alternative. Loaded with antioxidants and nutrients, it improves brain function, fat loss, and potentially lowers the risk of cancer, Type II Diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Drinking a cup of green tea an hour or so before bedtime will serve as a wholesome sleep aide and relax you.

o   Eat plenty of fruit and fiber. Fruit is also a natural antidepressant. Whole grains, brown rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and whole wheat pasta are all good choices as they aid in the release of serotonin, a brain chemical that plays a significant role in mood, anxiety, and happiness.

And lastly...

o   Sing. Yes, I said—sing. A 2013 article in Time magazine stated that singing has been scientifically proven to lower stress and reduce anxiety. When we sing our brain releases endorphins and oxytocin, both hormones found to relieve depression. The additional good news is...you don’t have to be a good singer to reap the healthy benefits of singing.

Scripture substantiates the fact that singing is an excellent antidote for depression. In Psalm 42:5, David is in a mental and emotional battle to rise above his negative emotions.

“Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God—soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God” (MSG).

David spoke to his soul, reminded himself of his hope in God and returned to praising him.

I have a dear friend who has a unique way of measuring her level of despondency. Though times in her life may be tough, I often hear her say, “But the little bird in my heart is still singing.”

Is the little bird in your heart singing today? If not, help it out. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord and watch your spirits soar.

Now it's your turn. What is one way you counter the winter blues?

I always welcome your comments.

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: Seaworthy

" 'Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place
and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves
in a boat to a solitary place."
―Mark 6:30–32, NIV

My husband's old wooden boat began to take on water―again. The puddle of water encircling his new Sperry Top-Siders was a telltale sign that he had patched it far too many times. As he paddled his way to shore, he knew it was time to invest in a new boat. After all, what good is a boat that won’t float?

We all want to be vessels God can use. Is your boat seaworthy? Or are you simply struggling to stay afloat?

Jesus knew the wearying effects of service and the importance of taking a break from its ceaseless demands. He invited the disciples to come away with him to a quiet place. They welcomed his invitation to rest. We should welcome it too.

Scripture invites us to cast our cares on the Lord (1 Peter 5:7). Is there some baggage you need to cast aside before you step into the boat?

Let’s stabilize our boats this week. We can assure our boat stays afloat by laying our baggage at the feet of Jesus and prayerfully considering each piece. He will show us the pieces we need for our journey and those we need to leave behind.

Now it's your turn. Make a list of the things you believe are adding to your boat’s instability. Then ask, “Is this a piece I need to throw overboard, something only God can eliminate, or something I need to hold on to?”

God is looking for a steady boat. Toss the extra baggage and make room for his presence.

I welcome your comments.

Blessings,
Starr

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: Wonderstruck

"When I consider your heavens,
      the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet."

―Psalm 8:3-7, NIV

As an artist, I can't even begin to imagine placing my finished work, my masterpiece, into the hands of a small child. One who can't even begin to fathom or appreciate the time, the heart, and the emotion invested into its creation process. Yet, God has done just that.

God, the Master Artist, crowned us with glory and entrusted the work of his fingers into our hands―the hands of his children.

He is faithful, even when we are faithless. Oh, that I would trust him as much as he trusts me. However, I can't wrap my mind around that either.

Now it's your turn. What is one thing about our Creator or his creation that leaves you wonderstruck?

Please leave a comment.

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: It is Written

"For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature.
So they have no excuse for not knowing God."
―Romans 1:20, NLT

Our handwriting is as unique to us as our fingerprints. Its characteristic style can serve as a blueprint of our minds. Though not an exact science, handwriting analysis reveals individualized markers of our personality and character. The examination of the strokes of our handwriting can uncover specific thought patterns, emotions and behavior. Our handwriting may change due to current circumstances and moods, however, the characteristics of our basic personality remain the same.

Accordingly, the broad creative strokes of God throughout our universe reveal not only his existence but give us glimpses into his divine nature.
His character is as diverse as his creation, yet he is the same yesterday, today and forever. From the smallest insect to the most majestic mountain range or deepest ocean, the revelation of his innate beauty is clearly seen.

Scripture declares that the earth is filled with God's glory―this wondrous hallmark of his presence leaves me breathless. How about you?

Take deliberate steps today to notice your surroundings and expect to see His signature there.

Now it's your turn. Although God's handwriting is everywhere, where do you see it most clearly? Also, feel free to copy and use this image without altering its content.

Please leave a comment.

Blessings,
Starr

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: Transparency

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."
―Psalm 51:10, NIV

This glass heart is a reminder that the blood of Christ washes away the blackness of our hearts and makes them transparent before him.

What can wash away my sin?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

No greater LOVE!

Steamin' Down the Track

No holdin' back what's comin' . . .

But we can hang on for the ride!

"Who am I, LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, My God you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You LORD God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men. There is no one like you, LORD, and there is no God but you!"
―1 Chronicles 17:16-17, 20, NIV

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: Empress of Winter

I found these winter beauties on the bush beneath my mother's bedroom window and placed them in a bowl which belonged to her mother. Amidst all of the Christmas displays, there is none more beautiful than the Empress of Winter.

In Chinese tradition, a camellia's perfectly symmetrical form symbolizes the expression of long lasting devotion. After the death of my mother, I was asked to recall one word that described her. The first word that came to my mind was "devoted." Mother always signed her cards to me, "Devotedly, Mom."

What a timely reminder these camellias are of my mother's long lasting devotion to me . . . not to mention that of my Father above.

Merry Christmas!

Devotedly,
Starr

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: Broken Things

The first ornament I reached for slipped from my grasp,

fell to the floor,

 and shattered.

No big deal.

I have another just like it―a replacement.

As I picked up the pieces,

I thought of how broken things are sometimes easily repaired,

but things which are shattered are hopeless.

God desires our brokenness.

He does not intend for us to be shattered.

He has no replacement!

Give him your brokenness.

For this―
                 He came!

"He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted . . .
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes."
―Isaiah 61:1, 3, NIV

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: The Last Hurrah

"Let the trees of the forest sing, let them sing for joy before the LORD."
―1 Chronicles 16:33, NIV

Fall exits as leaves rain like colorful ticker tape

in celebration

of Old Man Winter's coming.

Refusing to take its final bow until

it saturates

our souls with its jubilant song.

Drink it in.

Winter is long.

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: Line in the Sand

The God who set the boundaries for the sea is the same God who watches over you and me.

Is anything too hard for the Lord?

Take comfort in the fact that He is sovereign.

"I made the sand a boundary for the sea,
an everlasting barrier it cannot cross.
The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail;
they may roar, but they cannot cross it."

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: Little Is Much

"Do not despise these small beginnings; the Lord
rejoices to see the work begin."
―Zechariah 4:10, NLT
  • Noah had some gopher wood
  • Aaron had a rod
  • Moses had a staff
  • David had five smooth stones.
  • A widow had a small jar of oil
  • Another widow had a handful of meal and a little oil
  • Gideon had three hundred men
  • The wedding servants had six water pots
  • The young boy had five loaves and two fish.
  • Joseph of Arimathea had a tomb
  • What do you have?
       Release it.

Giving God what we have in the natural
paves the way for the supernatural.

WATCHWORD WEDNESDAY: The Never-Ending Story

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever."
―Psalm 118:1, NIV

"His love endures forever" appears forty-three times in God's Word. Twenty-six of those times are within Psalm 136.

We learn through repetition. This is one message God doesn't want us to forget.

His love is a love that never ends.

Give thanks!
